About Me - Adam | Players Can Contact Me Via adam @onlinepokerED.com
...Currently a 24 year old college student trying to finish strong (one of these days) with a dual major in Art & Education. I enjoy playing online poker and have been playing off and on for about 5 years now.
My Game Of Choice
My game of choice is 6 handed SNGs at $20-$40 buy-ins. I like sit-n-gos because they are convenient and challenging at $6-level buy-ins and up. I usually prefer to play turbo sit-n-gos because they usually don't go any longer than 30 minutes which is great when i have other things to do.
How I Got Started In Online Poker
I was a discus thrower my first few years in college and many of my team-mates and even coach were always going on-and-on about poker topics. Occasionally, we'd have a team dinner at Coach's house (centered around a sporting event) and have a fun $5 buy-in sng style game or two. Long story short, i quickly grew to enjoy the game of poker and soon started experimenting online with play money and freerolls.
My First Online Poker Room
I don't really remember how i ended up there, but the first room i played at was Absolute Poker in 2004. They were running a special freeroll event (Win Your College Tuition). I thought the promo sounded fun and was playing every available qualifier but never finished well enough to advance to the Main Event. Soon after, I played in their $250,000 guaranteed freeroll where i actually WON a qualifier with over 700 entrants. The first prize was $50,000 so needless to say, i was pretty disappointed when i busted out at the Main Event in 400th place for a measly $50.
A Summer As A Full Time SNG Online Poker Player
After a while of free-rolling it up, i rationalized that i might be decent enough player to grind out small buy-in sit-n-go tournaments with a positive ROI. Somehow, I ended up joining CD Poker. (This was before the UIGEA when the ipoker network allowed USA players). What attracted me to CD Poker was that they had "jackpot sit-n-go" tournaments. for a $2.50 buy-in i could play 12 player sit-n-gos, and if i won 4 in a row i would get a $2000 jackpot.
I ended up doing this for 3/4 of the summer in 2006 and made about $800 over the coarse of the summer playing these jackpot sngs hoping to take down 4 in a row and win a prize that would be a significant boost to my "poor college student" bank account. Unfortunately, the best i ever did was win 3 of these 12 player sngs in a row with a very disappointing 2cnd place finish on the 4th. After grinding it out all summer long without a whole lot to show for it, i got burned out and quit playing for a while.
My First MTT Score With Perfect Timing
The end of the summer was at hand and i was completely broke. I felt like for the first time in college i was at rock bottom financially and while taking summer classes and rent due in 3 DAYS. I rationalized that the only way to get some money fast was to play some more poker and hope to do well.
That Day I deposited $20 into Absolute Poker from an overdrawn bank account. I officially had -$60 to my name because of this questionable decision. I registered in a $6 SNG and won. I registered in another $6 SNG and won again! At this point, i had about $60 in my AP account and decided it was time to play in something that could get me a worthwhile score. That same evening, I registered in the $4k guaranteed $20 buy-in multi-table-tourney at AP.
Long story short, i somehow completely dominated this tournament and finished 1st place out of 236 entrants. This win scored me $1136 -- the most money i had ever had at once in my life! I immediately withdrew about $900 and then proceeded to lose the rest of my money on Absolute Poker with my new arrogant ego...Then i quit playing again for a while. Anyways, this particular occurrence is without-a-doubt my best experience with online poker.
Since then, i've played recreationally at mid range buy-in sngs off and on. I'm not a pro or an expert by any means, but i have learned to respect the game of holdem poker and been interested in learning how the game works and how to improve and have fun with it.
Me And Online Poker Currently
At the moment, you wont find me online for 5 hours at a time, unless it is ON-A-WHIM and I have some downtime where i want to see what i can do with $50. I have alot of different things going on, but i really do enjoy poker now and then. I particularly enjoy poker because it is truly a challenge game. At the same time, it is fun, and can be a method to add some money to your bank account if approached with solid strategy and discipline. New players can take a look at some poker tips on this site presented as an approach to a fun online poker experience.
My personal guidelines are that if i'm going to gamble with any particular game, bet, or whatever, i have to know the game well, it has to be enjoyable, and the money used to gamble with can not exceed what i would call a "recreational expense". Online Poker ED is not intended to promote irresponsible or illegal gambling activity. The development of this site is intended to be an easy and fast guide to good online poker sites, info, and player resources for 2010.
